The Lab

ArtWaves Festival, The Spa, Bridlington, Nov 2022

In partnership with The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Waves of Waste, Bridlington

It's the not so distant future and microplastics have taken over our oceans.

Enter The Lab to discover the weird mutant marine life within and create your own. Partnering with The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT), and their beach clean initiative Waves of Waste, this immersive installation aims to engage all ages by combining hands-on ceramics workshops with local ecological issues, imagination and storytelling.

Run as drop in sessions, participants had access to air dry clay and tables full of marine waste, collected on local beach cleans with YWT. Using anything on the table, visitors to the lab were able to cut, alter, assemble and embellish, creating an imaginary creature to add to the cabinet of curiosities. The maker then named their creature on a specimen display card, placing both into the cabinet, which slowly filled with bizarre mutant specimens throughout the 2-day festival.

Special thanks to Ana Cowie, Marine Pollution Officer at YWT who joined us in The Lab with a fantastic collection of shoreline finds!
